Lowry Laid Bare - Hunt For Nudes In The North

15 Mar 10 -

LS Lowry's iconic paintings of industrial northern England are to be recreated - using nudes.

The hunt is now on for 1,000 volunteers prepared to bare all in Manchester and Salford.

'Everday People' is the idea of artist Spencer Tunick, who has set up similiar stunts in Sydney, Montreal, Melbourne, Santiago and Barcelona.

Organisers hope the weather in Manchester and Salford will warm up in time for the event, over the first weekend of May, which will mark 10 years of the Lowry Centre at Salford Quays.

Michael Simpson, The Lowry's Head of Visual Arts & Engagement said: "Tunick's work not only reflects and records the landscape of an area but also its people.

"The Lowry has spent ten years delighting, engaging and challenging both local and national audiences with the very best in visual art and performance. This exhibition celebrates our achievements and signals our continuing ambition."

Whereas previous Tunick events have gathered together hundreds of naked bodies in one place, this event will use a variety of locations.

LS Lowry famously captured the movement of a mass of people through their everyday lives. Tunick hopes to emulate the sense of motion by asking his subjects to move around.

The artwork will be displayed at the Lowry Centre later in the summer.
