An investigation by Central FM News has found that Falkirk Council raised concerns internally about a protest outside Bo'ness Recreation Centre.
The venue shut a day earlier than planned in May, due to concerns about staff welfare.
Emails obtained through a Freedom of Information request show council officials discussed security measures - including a "visual deterrent" at the site.
Council officials discussed these security measures amid concerns people may refuse to leave the venue.
57 complaints were sent directly to council staff.
Meanwhile, more than 5,000 people signed a petition against the closure of the Centre.
Local government officials were concerned about a large-scale protest outside the venue on Friday 3rd May, organised by the "Save the Reccy" campaign group.
They also were concerned about vandalism and arson at the site.
A Falkirk Council spokesperson said: “As we said at the time in May 2024, as a consequence of postings on social media, an incident and protest activities planned at the centre, the Council had concerns for staff welfare and made the decision to close the Bo’ness Recreation Centre earlier than planned. The emails shared with Central FM News confirm this approach.
“Seven months on from the closure, the Council has already approved a major investment in a new sport and leisure wing at Bo’ness Academy and a report on the recent public consultation with the Bo’ness community on the facility will come to Executive in January 2025.”
