Forth Valley College staff striking

College lecturers across the Forth Valley are striking from today in a dispute over pay.

Members of the EIS-FELA union and College Employers Scotland were unable to enter "meaningful negotiations" last week.

Forth Valley College say classes are cancelled, but exams will go ahead.

An EIS spokesperson said “Although a revised pay claim was tabled to CES at the meeting, the employer’s side was unable to offer any assurances on certain elements of the pay uplift as well other parts of the claim. This is extremely disappointing, given that the EIS-FELA were hopeful these discussions would have been able to achieve enough tangible progress to consider suspending the proposed strike action next week, which will now go ahead as planned. We would urge CES to come back to the discussions early next week with firm proposals which address our claim.”

"College lecturing staff want to be back in colleges, delivering classes and helping their students achieve their qualifications. However, they will continue to fight in order to receive a suitable pay rise which addresses some of the financial pain and stress they have had to endure during the worst cost-of-living crisis in recent times.”

Kenny MacInnes, Principal of Forth Valley College, said: “We are disappointed that industrial action by EIS-FELA in relation to an ongoing national dispute, is continuing despite talks taking place. This time of year is a crucial period for our students as they work towards completing their courses, and there will be concerns over the impact this on-going industrial action will have. Our aim, as always, will be to minimise the impact on learning and teaching wherever possible and to do everything we can to ensure our students achieve their qualifications.

“We understand how challenging this situation is and would encourage students to reach out if they need support.

“We sincerely hope a resolution can be found soon, but will continue to keep our students, staff and partners updated as required.
