Labour win Falkirk South council by-election

Claire Aitken has been elected as councillor for the Falkirk South ward.

Voters in the area went to the polls yesterday to choose a new councillor to replace Euan Stainbank. He stepped down from the role after being elected as MP for Falkirk at the General Election in July.

It was a narrow victory for Labour. The SNP's Carol Beattie received 1,043 first-preference votes - 29 more than Claire Aitken. However, after the seventh stage of voting, the Labour candidate was confirmed as the victor.

Turnout was 24.9%.
